United Kingdom Marine Forecast Tips
Buoyweather is an incredibly powerful marine weather tool. There are no other weather websites that can provide so much information while making it so easy to use and be safe. Below are a few tips on picking good marine forecast points and understanding model benefits and limitations in United Kingdom or any location around the world.
TIP #1 - Pick Your Map Style
Buoyweather offers two ways to pick virtual buoy points and recieve United Kingdom marine forecasts.
- A set of quick maps with pre-defined virtual buoys. These are spaced at about 1° of resolution (60miles) and provide marine weather for most coastlines around the world.
- A dynamic Google map that allows you to drill down and find all the new virtual buoy location points that are spaced at 1/4° (15 miles) and and provide a marine weather forecast nearly everywhere.
You will always see the map style you choose unless you happen to visit a location where that map style is not available.
TIP #2 - Marine Forecast is Dynamic
Important: These United Kingdom marine forecasts are dynamically created for you directly from the models. They have not been reviewed nor created by a weather forecaster. Model data provides a guide to general atmospheric conditions. You use this data along with your local knowledge of conditions to make a call. Use of model data is essential in forecasting, but there are limitations to what a pure computer program can do.
TIP #3 - Choose Open Water Points
Choose United Kingdom ocean points that are away from land in open water and outside reefs. The wave model's land/sea border and bathymetry are not as refined as the actual coastline. The model doesn't see all the small islands, points, bays or reefs that may block waves or wind.
TIP #4 - Remember Local Topography
These United Kingdom marine models do not factor in highly local topography that may affect actual winds. A basic example would be if you visited Maui, Hawaii. For a portion of the Island, the wind accelerates due to compression while the wind is blocked on the other side of the island. The model can't see the mountain and if you know this you can make the adjustments. Every area near land has its own "10,000 ft volcano" type feature where you'll need to make adjustments for. The models are never wrong. It is up to us to read them correctly.
TIP #5 - For Storms See Left Menu
These are not Hurricane, Cyclone, Typhoon, or Tropical Storm forecasts. The storm circulations are too small at the eye for the models to resolve central pressure or wind speeds. Storm forecasts are done by teams of forecasters carefully studying satellite data. We have our own tropical storm tracking system and links to other resources on the left menu. PLEASE USE THEM IF A STORM IS NEAR.
TIP #6 - Assess and Respect Your Risk
If you are in an area prone to regular T-storms, those 50 knot gusts that last for an hour will not show up in the model numbers. The United Kingdom marine weather models can help you determine the risk if T-storms may occur. Getting hit with a squall/t-storm is a micro short term event and the models cannot pinpoint the exact locations. However, they can help evaluate the risk. If the risk is high and you see a dark cloud on the horizon, always be prepared!
TIP #7 - You Make the Call
No, you do not need to go back to school to study meteorology for United Kingdom marine forecasts. Look at what the model says, review the topography where your are (if near land) and by using some common sense coupled with a little bit of practice, it will become easier to make the call! We supply weather data where there are no meteorologists to do it for you. You can do it on your own and we do have what you need to get the job done and be safe. You will be better off forecasting for yourself.
