sailfish Challenge

The Bahamas Billfish Championship is a world-class fishing tournament series founded in 1973. Taking place April through June each year, the five Championship tournaments that comprise the Bahamas Billfish Championship series are governed by a uniform set of rules for qualifying billfish. Anglers can fish any or all tournaments with cumulative points determining the overall Bahamas Billfish Champions.

The Bahamas Billfish Championship was an early leader in billfish conservation and pioneered the use of time and date stamped digital images to verify releases. Along with Consistently increasing minimum length requirements, the Bahamas Billfish Championship has steadily raised the points for released billfish and, during the 2007 series, a record 444 billfish released.

Bahamas Billfish Championship Tips

  • Check the Buoyweather.com for 7 day wind and swell forecasts for the areas surrounding Abaco and Eluthera locations prior to the start of the Bahamas Billfish Championship. This will give you a good idea of what to expect and where to fish during the tournaments.

  • Blue Marlin can often be found feeding close to the surface in the Bahamas in water temperatures between 72 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Check SST and Altimetry charts to find temperature breaks within the 60-mile tournament boundary. Current breaks hold bait and serve as naturally migratory pathways for bait and the blue marlin that feed on them

  • Look for eddies that will bring clear blue water into the Bahamas Billfish Championship tournament zone and will often hold higher than normal concentrations of Blue Marlin.

  • Both lure trolling and dead/bait spreads have proved effective strategies for the Bahamas Billfish Championship. In recent years several larger-class fish have been raised on lures.
