Ahi Fever

The Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament is held annually in late June. The Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament is the state of Hawaii's largest fishing tournament and is limited to 200 teams. Held out of the Wai'anae small boat harbor in front of Poka'i bay off Oahu's Wai'anae Coast the Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament is scheduled to coincide with the beginning of the annual run of yellowfin tuna that show up during the summer months in large numbers off Oahu's leeward coast. Jungle rules prevail for the tournament-IFGA rules do not apply- and fish may be caught on any manner of live or dead bait. No live bait is allowed on any vessel prior to the start of each fishing day. Use of greensticks and electric reels is also prohibited. Cash prizes are awarded for the 8 largest Ahi boated each day as well as the 4 largest Marlin Boated each day. Prizes are also awarded for 2 largest Mahi and Ono and largest Otaru. The Grand Prize winner of the tournament wins an additional $5,000 and has his name engraved on the Ahi Fever Perpetual Trophy.

Ahi Fever Fishing Tournament Tips

  • Check the Buoyweather.com for 7 day wind and swell forecasts for the area offshore of Wai'anae. This will give you a good idea of what conditions to expect and where to fish during the tournament.

  • Schools of Ahi can often be found in the areas near the 1000 and 1500 fathom lines off the Wai'anae coast, although some boats have also had success in recent years off of the North Shore and Windward side of Oahu.

  • The porpoise schools 25+ miles off the Wai'anae Coast hold Ahi year-round......if you are lucky enough to find them!

  • 7 and 9 inch bullet lures trolled at 8 knots are a great way to catch ahi- but live baiting with opelu and aku around the buoys and porpoise is also a winning tactic.
